ZERUST® completed an on-site evaluation during the manufacturing process and recommended individually packaging each part in 2-mil ZERUST® ICT® Ferrous Yellow Gusset VCI Bags to protect the parts from the cardboard packaging acids and corrosive contaminants that were causing corrosion.

Problem

A retail manufacturer of hot rolled steel parts was experiencing rusting on parts for their retail displays, resulting in products being scrapped at the point of sale and lost revenue. They originally had the parts stocked without packaging, so customers could handle the parts at the point of sale, resulting in parts corroding. They then tested packaging the parts inside cardboard boxes without success, as potential customers liked to look over the parts with bare hands before purchase. In addition, the cardboard display packaging posed a potential corrosion risk during transit as acids from the cardboard could leech onto the metal surface. After these unsuccessful trials, they contacted ZERUST® as they were looking for a corrosion control company to assist with finding a corrosion solution that would allow potential customers to look over the parts while also providing corrosion-free results.

Solution

The local ZERUST® Technical Service Representative visited the hot rolling facility to inspect the manufacturing and packaging process. During this visit, the ZERUST® Technical Service Representative recommended individually packaging each part in a 2-mil ZERUST® ICT® Ferrous Yellow Gusset VCI Bags before placing them into the cardboard packaging. With the parts packaged inside of a VCI bag, the parts were protected against the acids in the cardboard packaging and the corrosive contaminants on the customer’s hand while they inspected the parts at the point of sale.

Since corrugated cardboard tends to absorb water/moisture, this activates the acidic residue, which will cause corrosion on metals placed directly on or near the corrugate.  To avoid this, it is important that the metal parts are separated from the corrugated with VCI packaging.
