What?

ZERUST® ICT®510-OPS Outdoor Preservation VCI Shrink Film and ZERUST® OPS Preservation Tape were used to protect the exterior surfaces of large industrial chillers from rust and corrosion. Axxanol™ Spray-G was applied to the critical carbon steel components of the chillers, and the VC2-2 Vapor Capsules were used to protect the electrical boxes from tarnish and corrosion

Why?

The customer needed to protect the internal and external surfaces of large industrial chillers from rust and corrosion for up to 2 years during outdoor storage

How?

ZERUST® Technical staff visited the customer’s facility to look over the large industrial chillers the customer was looking to protect. After reviewing the chillers, ZERUST® advised that the plain poly and desiccants the customer were going to use was not enough protection and recommended the use of ICT®510-OPS VCI Shrink, Spray-G, and Vapor Capsules to provide the 2 years^‡ of protection needed during outdoor storage

Problem

A global chemical and specialty materials company that engineers and manufactures large industrial chillers contacted ZERUST® as they were looking for a corrosion control company to assist with the corrosion protection of industrial chillers while they are stored outdoors for up to 2 years. The internal surfaces of the chillers were protected via nitrogen purge, but the external surface area also needed protection. The external surface area was composed of mixed metals, including carbon steel bolts that were the most susceptible to corrosion. Additionally, an electrical control box was attached to each chiller. The customer initially thought plain shrink film would provide sufficient corrosion protection on the external surface, and the desiccant would be enough to protect the electrical box.

Solution

After explaining the potential failures involved with using plain poly shrink film and desiccants for the protection of metals, the customer decided to try ZERUST® ICT®510-OPS Outdoor Preservation VCI Shrink Film, ZERUST® OPS Preservation Tape, Axxanol™ Spray-G, and VC2-2 Vapor Capsules. Next, Axxanol™ Spray-G was applied to the critical carbon steel components, and the Vapor Capsules were centrally placed inside the electrical boxes. Lastly, the OPS film was used to protect the exterior of each chiller, and the seams were covered in OPS Preservation Tape.

Results

The customer was very pleased with the corrosion knowledge provided by the ZERUST® Technical Service Team and with corrosion solutions implemented to protect the industrial coolers during outdoor storage. The customer now implements these products and procedures for all future outdoor inventory storage.
