VCI bags, also known as Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor bags, are polyethylene packaging manufactured with Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor Technology (VCI) impregnated in the film. These bags release corrosion-inhibiting vapor molecules inside the sealed package. The molecules migrate through the enclosed air space and bond to exposed metal surfaces, forming a thin, invisible protective layer that helps stop rust before it starts.

Unlike oils, greases, or coatings, VCI protection does not alter the surface of the metal. The protective layer blocks oxygen, moisture, and airborne contaminants, keeping parts clean, dry, and ready for immediate use when removed from the bag.

How Do VCI Bags Work?

When metal parts are sealed inside a VCI bag, the vapor corrosion inhibitor molecules activate and disperse evenly throughout the enclosure. These molecules are attracted to metal surfaces and form a temporary molecular barrier that interrupts the electrochemical reactions responsible for corrosion. Once opened, the VCI molecules naturally dissipate, leaving no residue and eliminating the need for cleaning or degreasing.

When Should You Use VCI Bags?

VCI bags are used when metal components require corrosion protection during storage or shipment without the added labor of applying and removing rust-preventative coatings. They are especially effective in situations where parts must remain clean and ready for assembly or use.

Common use cases include:

    • Short- and long-term storage of machined, stamped, or fabricated metal parts
    • Domestic and export shipments, including humid or fluctuating environments
    • Work-in-progress transfers between suppliers, manufacturers, and assembly facilities
    • Maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) kits that need corrosion protection until deployment

What Types of Metals Can Be Protected?

VCI bags are suitable for protecting many ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, brass, and multimetal assemblies.

Benefits

Using VCI bags offers several practical advantages:

  • No oils, greases, or coatings to apply or remove
  • Clean, dry parts that are ready to use immediately
  • Reduced labor, waste, and overall corrosion-related costs
  • Reliable protection during storage, handling, and transportation

Are VCI Bags Right for Your Application?

VCI bags are ideal when corrosion protection is required, but surface treatments are undesirable or impractical. Selecting the correct size, VCI formulation, and sealing method helps ensure consistent protection for the duration of storage or shipment. For challenging environments or long-term protection needs, they can also be combined with other corrosion control methods as part of a complete packaging system.
