ZERUST® AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL

For optimum performance and best practice, it is always recommended to use deionized (DI) or reverse osmosis (RO) water. This will also ensure that the bath life is improved when used. However, if DI or RO water is unavailable, AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL has excellent hard water tolerance. We found no significant difference in cleaning between the bath made with tap water and DI water. Water with high levels of hardness can increase scale deposits throughout the system.

For immersion applications, stainless steel, mild steel, or poly-lined tanks are recommended.

Yes, you may use concentrations higher than 5%. However, if concentrations of 10 – 15% are used, the product may not rinse as well.

ZERUST® offers a complete line of VCI packaging products (e.g., ZERUST® ICT®510-C, ICT®520-HS, ICT®420-35) that are compatible or work synergistically with AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL. AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL must be thoroughly rinsed from the metal surface before placing it in VCI packaging products. However, compatibility tests have not been completed with any non-ZERUST® VCI packaging products, so it’s recommended that compatibility tests be performed before combining AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL with any non-ZERUST® VCI packaging.

No, parts should be thoroughly rinsed and dried from the surface before any painting processes.

Yes. However, the surface temperature should be lower than 122°F (50°C).

AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL should be rinsed from the surface before any heat-treating processes.

AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL was tested and remained stable with temperatures up to 140°F (60°C). If bath temperatures exceed 140°F (60°C), cleaning effectiveness may drop. Cool the AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL solution to below 140°F (60°C) before running further parts.

AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL will not stain ferrous substrates but can leave a white residue if not rinsed properly. On aluminum substrates, some slight staining was noted when parts were exposed to the air interface and when parts were not properly rinsed. Therefore, it is important to fully submerge/coat and properly rinse any aluminum parts.

Aluminum parts should not require a rust preventative. However, ferrous parts should be protected after being cleaned with AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL and rinsed with water. An oil or water-based rust preventative can be used depending on the required protection time.

AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL is easily removed by rinsing with purified water, such as reverse osmosis or deionized water. Using warm water during the rinsing process will remove AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL faster.

To properly dry the coated parts, we recommend using a mechanical fan, air knife, and/or industrial heating oven at 212°F (100°C) or higher after the parts are coated.

No, parts should be thoroughly rinsed, dried, and as close to room temperature as possible before packaging. AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL has been tested to be compatible with ZERUST® VCI packaging (e.g., ZERUST® ICT®510-C, ICT®520-HS) and plain plastic packaging. Test before using any other types of non-ZERUST® VCI packaging (See ZERUST® packaging guidelines).

Spraying offers better impingement on the part surfaces, and cleaning times are generally shorter than immersion. However, immersion application for AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL is recommended when large quantities of small parts are processed or when parts have holes, slots, internal surfaces, etc., that spray applications cannot reach.

AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL is designed to be rinsed from the surface. Therefore, aluminum surfaces should be kept as dry as possible to prevent excessive oxidation and water spots. On ferrous substrates, AxxaWash™ KMS-310AL left on the surface offered some very short-term corrosion protection but is not recommended, and a dedicated rust inhibitor (Axxatec™ or Axxanol™ product) should be used to protect those substrates.

Yes, a circulating pump is required, and the flow rate is tank size-dependent. Typical tank turnover should be 0.25 – 1.0 times per minute (for example, a 100-gallon tank should have a pump system that has a minimum flow rate of 25 – 100 gallons/minute).

A progressive filtration system is recommended to prevent clogging of nozzles or redeposition of particulate matter. A three-stage 100, 50, 25 micron filter system is recommended.
